Optimizing KDE Plasma 6 on CachyOS
CachyOS already gives your setup a solid edge right out of the box with x86-64-v3/v4 optimized packages, custom BORE/EEVDF kernels, and aggressive memory management. But if you’re running KDE Plasma 6 on Wayland, you can tweak a few desktop settings and environment variables to squeeze out lower rendering latency, faster UI responses, and better power governor reaction times.
Here is a quick guide on optimizing KDE Plasma 6 on CachyOS:
1. Eliminate Wayland Rendering Latency
By default, the KWin Wayland compositor aims for tear-free, perfectly timed visual framing. If you want instantaneous input response and raw desktop fluidity, you can configure KWin to minimize synthetic presentation delays.
- Open System Settings > Display & Monitor > Compositor (or check latency settings under display preferences).
- Set the latency mode to prefer lower latency.
- If you experience micro-stutters under heavy GPU loads on Wayland, you can force KWin to use direct page-flipping by setting the following environment variable in
~/.config/environment.d/10-kwin.conf:

KWIN_DRM_NO_AMS=1
Note: This forces KWin to use traditional page-flipping on certain GPU drivers. If your desktop is already completely fluid and tear-free, you can leave this unset.
2. Speed Up Plasma Animation Speed
Plasma 6 transitions look great, but quickening the animation duration makes the entire system feel significantly snappier without touching hardware clocks.
- Open System Settings > Colors & Themes > Global Themes.
- At the bottom of the page, locate the Animation speed slider.
- Move it 1–2 notches towards Instant.
Windows, context menus, and overview effects will still render smoothly, but open instantly.
3. Trim KRunner & Plasma Search Plugins
Every time you hit Alt + Space or start typing in the Application Launcher, Plasma queries dozens of runners (calculators, dictionary, bookmarks, system settings, file indexing, etc.). Trimming unused runners reduces memory usage and gives instant search results.
- Open System Settings > Workspace > Search > Plasma Search.
- Uncheck search plugins you don’t use (e.g. Bookmarks, Calendar Events, Unit Converter, Software Center).
- Keep the essentials checked: Applications, Command Line, and System Settings.
4. Optimize the CPU P-State Governor & EPP
CachyOS provides responsive CPU schedulers, but you can verify that your Intel or AMD P-State driver ramps frequencies instantly when launching heavy workloads or compiling.
Check your current Energy Performance Preference (EPP) with:

- If it returns
balance_performance, that works fine for daily battery/power balance. - If you’re on AC power and want zero frequency ramp-up latency, switch your power profile to Performance via the Battery/Power icon in the system tray or your power management daemon.
5. Clean Up Autostart and Background Services
Background daemons can accumulate over time on rolling-release installs. Auditing them keeps boot times low and saves RAM.
- Go to System Settings > System > Autostart and disable apps you don’t need running immediately at login.
- Go to System Settings > Startup and Shutdown > Background Services.
- Turn off services for hardware or features you don’t use (for example, disable Wacom Tablet if you don’t use a drawing tablet, or toggle off Samba Status Monitor if you don’t use Windows network shares).
